In this conversation with Simon Glendenning former Global Executive and entrepreneur who reflects on the twists and turns of his career with one very consistent theme — that as a leader he is there to serve his team and his customers through his principles.

Simon’s leadership journey has taken him around the world in global corporate roles in Financial Services, to Africa on placement to support and learn from community initiatives there, and through several successful entrepreneurial ventures most recently an on-line fitness business.

He now focuses on a new endeavour, Raised Hand applying his energies to help out-of-work professionals contribute their skills and time to start-up businesses needing help to navigate the turbulent market conditions imposed by Co-Vid19 restrictions. Even though this venture is fresh out of the starting-blocks, it’s already been applauded by Start-ups Victoria.

What’s the best way to grow through a crisis?

Empower your team whilst providing clear parameters. Keep in contact and check in frequently to support without interrupting the self-perpetuating momentum you’ve put in place.

Businesses that are thriving right now, whether they are in high-demand markets or markets that are reduced or even suspended entirely — those that are doing well have strong, positive cultures that prioritise, celebrate and incentive attitudes that promote their values and focus on the customer.

I love this simple yet effective definition of a what makes an ‘unstoppable’ team from Simon Glendenning.

“Unstoppable teams 1) have values at their core, 2) provide great customer experience and 3) take great pride in these primary 2 things

Such a team has a clearly defined set of values at their core and a ‘customer first mentality’. And critically, they take great pride in these two key elements, reflect on them often and celebrate outcomes that demonstrate them living their values and providing excellent service to customers.

“Don’t attribute happiness to achieving specific goals.
Be empowered by the overall purpose”

Powerful and timely words in a word where every goal feels like it needs to be revised, postponed or cast aside.

The majority of my conversations at the moment, with my coach or mentor, with my team and my clients and network connections in some way reference this comment from Simon Glendenning. That it’s our pursuit of purpose that sustains us, motivates us, and keep us moving forward.
